What “default” means
If you want one checkout for a US trip that already has dates, start the search on Expedia. It does not mean we hide Orbitz or Travelocity — they are siblings, documented on Package Trip and Family Trip. It does not mean Priceline is a scam. It does not mean a park lodge concessioner is listing the same room on an OTA.
The questions before a click
1. Can this trip move?
Weather, timed entry, a ferry, a child, a work call. If yes, a refundable named hotel — even when it looks more expensive today — is the adult move. A package that makes the hotel nonrefundable because the flight is cheap is not a savings; it is a new itinerary you have not admitted to yet.
2. Are you booking one product or three?
A flight, a hotel, and a car are different contracts even when they share a confirmation email. Bundles can be cheaper. They can also glue a nonrefundable fare to a room you still needed to be able to undo. Read the bundle rules, not the green button.
3. Do you need the hotel name and the town name?
Springdale is not St. George. Tusayan is not Flagstaff. An airport hotel in Las Vegas is not a Zion week. If the OTA map pin is the only geography you will check, you are shopping for a pin, not a trip. For gateway lodging, Park Stay starts on Hotels.com for a reason.
Sources we trust first
- The live rate rules on the merchant checkout (package vs standalone, cancellation, prepaid).
- Public airline and airport pages for connection reality — not the most optimistic layover a search form will sell.
- Public National Park Service pages and Recreation.gov when the stay is a park week. Sister site Park Week is the itinerary layer; this site is the checkout layer.
- Typical highway geography, padded: Las Vegas to Springdale is a morning, not a side quest after a red-eye.
- Product documentation: what an Expedia package is, what Orbitz and Travelocity share with it, what Hotels.com currently calls its rewards. We do not print an earn rate.
We do not scrape a dozen blogs and average their “20–40% off” claims into a number we publish as fact. We do not mystery-shop every Tuesday. We do not invent coupons, star scores, or first-person trip reports.
Independence
4 Life Health Wealth LLC publishes this site. We applied to CJ programs for Expedia (advertiser ID 1874913), Orbitz (4861280), and Travelocity (1549809). Advertisers do not write these guides. If a default ever becomes a paid ranking, this page and the FTC disclosure change first.
